Abstract mid century mosaic by Maximilien Herzele (1913-1969)
A beautiful, complex and important mosaic by French artist and mosaicist; Maximilien Herzele. This piece dates from the 1950s and is most likely a maquette for a larger, commissioned work, possibly; 'La Porte Etroite' 1954. An atelier stamp and artist label are on the back/verso.
Provenance: from the collection of Pierre Rouve (1915-1998) art critic, collector and film producer. Rouve had strong ties with Halima Nalecz and the Drian Gallery. This piece was most likely exhibited at The Drian.
Maximilien Herzele (1913 -1969) was a French mosaicist and stained glass artist. A graduate of the National School of Fine Arts, he began his career alongside Fernand Léger and Max Ingrand.
