Austin Davies (1926-2012) Mid century abstract
Austin Davies (1926-2012) Painter and teacher, born in Liverpool. Studied at Liverpool School of Art 1946-51 with Arthur Ballard and Martin Bell. Davies was a prominent exhibitor in the Liverpool Academy in the 1950’s, often showing taut, gritty pictures of the city. Portrait of his first wife, Beryl Bainbridge is in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery.
Also showed: Arts Council UK, AIA and he held several one man shows at the Piccadilly Gallery, London and Coombs Contemporary. Settled in Australia.
Held by: Fitzwilliam Museum, The V&A and Walker Art Gallery.
Also reputed to have taught John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe whilst at Liverpool.
